Expanded Learning

Serving Students in Grades Universal Pre-Kindergarten–8th

To meet the needs of busy working families, Expanded Learning Programs provide the flexibility to extend learning for school-age children ages 4 to 14. With a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities, our programs serve children with a wide variety of interests—supporting exploration, critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills.

Our trained staff members are ready to help students:

  • Improve reading, writing, fitness, and social skills
  • Experience fun, friendships, and learning
  • Build character and confidence
  • Get a jumpstart on homework completion

Reinforcing 21st Century Learning Goals

We begin each day with homework support, followed by at least three planned activities in creative arts, science, language arts, math, and health and fitness. Through these activities, students strengthen the five Cs—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, character, and communication skills.

Thanks to a strong curriculum and excellent staff, our program encourages students to take personal responsibility for their actions while recognizing and cultivating individual abilities—a winning formula for academic and personal success.

Mind-Expanding Enrichment Opportunities

Homework Time: Students are provided time, supplies, and support in an environment conducive to completing homework or school assignments.

Social Emotional Learning: Supporting the whole child is a WSD priority. All programs incorporate the Sanford Harmony curriculum.

Project B.O.L.D.: Builds character through traits like honesty, respect, and problem-solving. Students participate in community projects that reinforce these values.

Fitness: Physical activity and lessons in health, nutrition, stress management, and goal setting help students understand the value of wellness.

KidsLit: This literacy program provides 30 minutes of daily reading and writing activities to help students meet and exceed literacy goals.

KidzScience: Designed for grades 3–5, this inquiry-based program includes four types of kits: Green Science Kits: Focus on environmental science and sustainability—topics include alternative energy, gardens, water conservation, and recycling.

  • Life Science Kits: Explore ecosystems, animal adaptations, plant habitats, and interdependence in nature.
  • Physical Science Kits: Cover air resistance, magnetism, and surface tension.
  • Forensic Science Kits: Promote inquiry through real-world problem solving, observation, and analysis.

KidzMath: Uses cooperative games to help students build confidence, reinforce math skills, and work collaboratively. Activities differ from traditional math lessons but align with core competencies.

Our Educational Approach – Where Learning Meets Fun!

With over 30 years of experience designing engaging out-of-school-time programs, the Westminster School District Expanded Learning team knows what works for students, families, and teachers. Our approach balances student-initiated learning with adult-led activities that enhance school-day learning, all while developing 21st century skills known as the Five Cs:

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Critical Thinking
  • Creativity
  • Character

We support the whole child through activities like arts, sports, science, and literacy. Programming is aligned to both district-wide and individual school learning goals. At the end of the day, students continue learning, parents have peace of mind, and everyone wins.
